Industrial and agricultural town and largest town in the Latrobe Valley in Australia. The other important towns in the Latrobe valley are Moe and Morwell. They all fall in the municipality of Latrobe City. Combined population about 70000 Industry: Brown coal mining. Loy Yang Power stations (Huge Brown coal burning power stations) Dairy Paper Mill Before the mining this was a picturesque agricultural town. The lignin decompositon lakes at the local paper mill also cause a serious problem of smell when there is a prevailing westerly wind. There has been a recent problem with mesothelioma due to asbestos lagging used in some of the old power stations (now demolished).
