Because it is in the s -block; Like the other metals in the group it has only one valence electron - If that doesn't answer your question I could explain it a bit more.

how does hydrogen act like a nonmetal
i am aware of the fact that it sometimes acts like a metal in that it conducts electricity and reflects light.. therefore, how does it act like a nonmetal:?:

it only have one electron....?
well...about counducting electricity...Hydrogen can't conduct electricity if it at form of gas,but it can conduct electricity when it is at liquid form or something like that...e.g..HCl......Hydro..something....or hydro..something acid....

| In answer to someone's ? on how hydrogen behaves as a nonmetal-----you know nonmetals usually react with metals by gaining electrons, well hydrogen does that forming the hydride ion.

When Hydrogen is in Liquid form it is a good conductor of electricity.
Found on this page about a half way down:

Hydrogen is in group one because it has one elecron in its outer shell, which match every other atom in group 1. All atoms in group 1 has 1 electron in its outer shell. Also it is theorised that hydrogen is a metal but it could also be a non metal. I think it is a metaloid because it has propities of non metals and metals.
