well im doing a school project and i want to know all about unknown elements and the question that i want to find out ishow do we know the atomic weight of an element when we havent even discovered the element? also pleas tell me anything about unknown elemeents, coz im a boffin!!!!!!!!!! That website Guest/Bolverk linked looks like it's very relevant to your question.

It looks like the answer is not simple. It seems to be a complicated problem for physical chemists. I've never had to solve problems like that myself.
