Hi,
I've just started my course in As level Chemistry- and I have got a peice of homework with questions we haven't even learnt about.
Write an equation for the process whose energy (enthalpy) change is the first ionisation enthalpy of sodium.
What exactly is first ionisation and how would I go about answering the above question?
I've tried looking on the creative chemistry website but Im still very confused.
Thanks in advance!

1st ionization energy is the energy require to remove 1 mol of electron from 1 mol of neutral gaseous atom
Na(g) -> Na+ + e-

The ionization potential, or ionization energy, of an atom or molecule is the energy required to strip it of an electron.
More generally, the nth ionization energy is the energy required to strip it of an nth electron after the first n − 1 have already been removed.
So the 1st ionization energy is :
the energy required to remove the 1st electron from neutral gaseous atom
ALways the 3rd I.E more that 2nd I.E more that 1st I.E
Sodiun (Na) :
1st I.E = 496
2nd I.E = 4,560
