Definition of Inert

An inert chemical is one that is stable and unreactive under specified conditions.

At one time, the noble gases in Group 18 of the periodic table were known as the inert gases, because they had not been observed to form any compounds. However, most of the noble gases have now been observed to form compounds, although generally under unusual conditions. Helium and neon are highly inert; they form no compounds.
