Definition of bond-dissociation energy, D (SI unit: kJ mol-1, or J (per molecule))

The enthalpy (per mole) required to break a given bond of some specific molecular entity by homolysis, e.g. forCH4 H3C. + H.symbolized as D(CH3-H) (cf. heterolytic bond-dissociation energy). See also bond energy.
