so... i need to come up with a method to do a back titration involving a group 2 carbonate MCO3, 1M HCl, 0.1M NaOH and phenolphthalein.
so far i know that i have to dissolve the MCO3 in excess HCl in a volumetric flask, and add distilled water up till the mark of the the flask. and then im stuck. i'm not sure which one i add the phenolphthalein to (ie which solution goes into the burette and which one goes in the conical flask). PLEASE HELP. any advice will be much appreciated. thank you so much! |

Usually acid goes into the burette and base into the conical flask.

the NaOH goes in the burette, and you add the phenolphthalein to the HCl in your experiment.

take a sample of the MCO3. dissolve in HCl and add water.Boiling will help complete the reaction by evolving the CO2 produced. add 2-5 drops of phenolphthalein. If the solution turns pink, add more acid. The solution should be colorless before titration. If already colorless, start titrating with NaOH.
