That made you sit up, didn't it?
Someone daring to say the great Michael Faraday, father of electromagnetism and discoverer of benzene wasn't a scientist, but it's true! Although we call him a scientist, he wouldn't have called himself a scientist and none of his friends or colleagues would have called him one either. The word scientist was only invented in 1833 and didn't become widely accepted until near the beginning of 20th century. It was invented by William Whewell to mean someone who was an expert in the study of nature. "Originally devised during a fiery debate whose participants included Samuel Taylor Coleridge, "scientist" was a reviled term which somehow survived while etymologically preferable competitors such as "sciencer", "scientiate" and "scientman" faded away." http://www.stanford.edu/dept/HPS/Brightsparks.html Last edited by Friar Tuck; January 8th, 2010 at 08:28. |

-ist is too mainstream in science to change now.
Biologist Chemist Physicist Geologist Metallurgist Technologist The exception, in more ways than one (you'll know what I mean if you've every met one ), is astronomer.
