Dear People,
thanks for helping me so much. I recently read a periodic table and found some strange difference between molar volume and atomic volume.does anyone know the difference bewteen both? does anyone have a definition of molar volume and the definition of atomic volume? Please help. Heres what i got atomic volume=the relative atomic mass of the element divided by it’s density molar volume=the volume of one mole of that substance. Did i get it right? Please help because i saw on some periodic table the values are different for the same element :cry: |

This is molar volume:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molar_volume It's the volume of one mole of the substance as you said. Atomic volume is how much space a single atom takes up. Molar and atomic volumes are different because we're talking different amounts of the material. Molar volume takes into account how closely the atoms are packed and the spaces between them while atomic volume is only for a single atom. |

Mass divided by density does equal volume in general. I don't know what you mean by "relative" atomic mass. I also am not sure whether you're referring to a macroscopic sample of the element when you talk about it's density or a single atom. I suspect the former which would describe molar volume, not atomic volume. |

atomic volume: the volume occupied by 1 gram-atom of an element in the solid state i gram atom is one atom right? |
