If you have reputable jewelers in your town, they'll be able to tell you the carat and they should be able to offer you a fair price. I've also read about cash for gold websites, but what I've read about the prices they offer people means I wouldn't use them myself.

Here is some info from the BBC today. The British Office of Fair Trading has ordered companies that buy gold from people by post to improve the way they operate. It looks like some companies are offering very low prices for gold.

you will get the best price for your gold selling it to the public. ebay is a good place to do this. i would recommend that you only allow people who have good reputation to bid for your gold. this reduces the possibility that they will try to cause problems for you.

i've bought gold coins from ebay. i've been happy with the outcome. the only thing that bothers me a little is that osmium has a similar density to gold. you can take osmium mixed with a lighter metal and produce something with identical density to gold. put a coating of real gold on the outside of your fake gold and you've made a very convincing fake. the only way to prove it's a fake is to cut it open. people don't want to do that with gold they've bought.
