Corrosion of metals is usually described chemically as oxidation. Metals react with oxygen or water and oxygen to form oxides and hydroxides.

corrosion if metals usually occur when metal is exposed in air or soaked in water. one example of metal corrosion is the rusting of metal. when metal (iron, Fe) is exposed to air or soaked in water for a long time forms rust. when rust is formed, the metal is oxidized (for Fe metal it forms ferric oxide, commonly known as rust)
