Natural rubber is also known as an elastomer, which is an elastic hydrocarbon polymer. The natural rubber or elastomer is derived from the milky colloidal mixture called latex. The purified form of natural rubber is the chemical called polyisoprene. Polyisoprene is the type of rubber which can be produced synthetically.

Hope this helps. ^_^

Polymerization doesn't happen with hydrocarbons in general. It only happens with hydrocarbons which have double bonds or triple bonds.

Under the right conditions an alkene which has a C = C bond can open the bond and become C - C. Some of the electrons that formed the original double bond are now available to bond with another C = C causing the double bond to open up. The molecule grows bigger as the carbon units begin to form a chain. The process repeats with alkene molecules joining together into a carbon chain molecule, which we call a polymer.
