Haha oh well, I think I solved the problem.
I ran the plate, scraped the crap from the top and re-ran the plate. No smudges. I suppose the plates I left out picked up something from the atmosphere. Will be interesting to see if the plates that are stored in sealed containers contain any mystery smudges.
I guess I move too fast for forums :P
