Elements whose symbols don't match their names
Some elements have symbols that don't match their names. The symbols come from Latin and German. The Germans are big in chemistry and the Romans were first with older elements.
Ag = Argentum (Silver) Au = Aurum (Gold) Cu = Cuprum (Copper) Fe = Ferrum (Iron) Hg = Hydragyrum (Mercury) K = Kalium (Potassium) Na = Natrium (Sodium) Pb = Plumbum (Lead) Sb = Stibium (Antimony) Sn = Stannum (Tin) W = Wolfram (Tungsten) |
Thanks for that list. I already knew Au, Fe, Na, Pb and W. Now I'll memorize the others. I don't know if it'll ever be useful, but I want to know these things. I wish we could call W wolfram. It sounds so much more exciting than tungsten.
