Need help on chemistry redox titration!!urgently!!
5Fe2+ 8H+ + MnO4 - = 5FE3+ + Mn2+ + 4H2O
the question is asking me determine the % of iron II and iron III in a mixture containing both, where i am given 200cm3 of a solution containing 1.3g of iron ions(Fe 2+ Fe 3+) using potassium magnanete (here is where i get confuse) You may assume that each of the 2 ions of is present to at least 30% by mass (doesnt this contradict the question?) also, i tried calculating it out via those normal calculas titration method but i cant go any further unless if i know the vol. of potassium maganate used to titrate the iron solution. Can i just make it up what vol. is required to titrate the iron solution with the potassium maganate?? |
it is more than simple. You must titrate the Fe2+/Fe3+ mixture with KMnO4 in acidic solution. The mixture will use the permangamante during the oxydation of Fe2+ to Fe3+. When all Fe2+ dissapeared the solution turns violet (KMnO4 in excess), then stop the titration.
The amount of permanganate used is to find the amount of Fe2+. The rest was Fe3+ from the beginning. |
