Mixing gases

I need help with a basic chemistry problem.

A mixture of CO2 and SO2 has a mass of 2.952 grams and contains a total of 0.05300 moles. How many moles of CO2 are in the mixture?

I really have no idea where to begin, so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

gas mixture

Let x = mol CO2
Let y = mol SO2

now make 2 equations with 2 unknowns. Use substitution to solve for x and y.

CO2 = 40amu
SO2 = 64amu

therefore 40x + 64y = 2.952

and x+y=0.05300

Hopefully you can solve it from there.

I can't do all of the work for you. :idea:
