C4H5NS(Mustard oil ) + NaOH = ?

anyone out there?

Let me know the balanced chemical eqution of NaOH with mustard oil, with the required conditions.

I'm not 100% on this, but after looking at the structure of mustard oil, the isothiocyanate CH2=CHCH2NCS, I expect that the reaction would be base catalysed hydrolysis.

CH2=CHCH2NCS + 2 H2O ----> CH2=CHCH2NH2 + CO2 + H2S

As for conditions, I'd try refluxing a continuously stirring mixture of mustard oil + aqueous NaOH.

Be aware that I don't know if this is correct, it's just what I think would happen. If you are planning to do this yourself, H2S is very unpleasant.

I'm also not very much inside to this subject. Acutally, one of my friend, who is a teacher in some rular area, asked me to search out the equation for C4H5NS(Mustard oil ) + NaOH = ?.

Actually, it was me who is trying to convince him, that one can search out so many queries relating to one's field by joining field relating forums etc. As, I'm a s/w developer, and know so many active forums relating to my fields, and often get my questions answered within a day or so.

Thank you 'Dan the Chemist', for the reply, but can I know the exact solution for

C4H5NS(Mustard oil ) + NaOH = ?

I expect CH2=CHCH2NCS + 2 H2O --> CH2=CHCH2NHCOOH + H2S

(NaOH is a catalyst, ie it is regenerated during the reaction, this is why it does not appear in the equation)

Which may decarboxylate

CH2=CHCH2NHCOOH --> CH2=CH2CH2NH2 + CO2
