IKI reagent (for starch) question

IKI, Iodine solution in Potasium Iodine:
How to prepare the reagent?
What are the limitations / drawbacks in its use for starch detection?

The method is very sensitive, and the amount of iodine is quite small. Also, you can use a simply iodine solution into ethanol (the presence of KI can be explained only if you cannot use alcohol). Usually, I/KI is 1:1 (mole), in order to form KI3, a water soluble complex. If you could use alcohol solutions, even 1g I2 per litre ethanol is too much. After preparation, the reagent must be kept into a dark (brown or green) bottle.
