hi am new to this site am just wundering if :

any body can help me its hjomework for school :


why do some elements in the periodic table e.g. pb is lead but magnesium is mg why isnt lead L or ld ?
please help :shock: :P

when the periodic table was created many latin names were used and lead is one of them. Plumbum I believe is the latin term for lead.

The majority of the chemial names (when discovered) were Latin and German, i.e. for Lead it was Plumbum, and hence you get Pb.
